How many lumens do you need per room? It may seem like a simple calculation, but looking only at the number of square metres rarely produces the best result. Lumens indicate how much light a light source produces, but not where that light ultimately reaches.

A kitchen, for example, requires sufficient functional light on the worktop. In a living room, atmosphere is often more important, while a dressing area requires good illumination of wardrobes and clothing. The same number of lumens can therefore produce a very different effect in each room.

Ceiling height, dark or light materials and the beam angle of a luminaire also influence how much light you experience. This is why using a fixed number of lumens per square metre is not always the best approach.
