How many spotlights do you need per m²? This is one of the most frequently asked questions when planning lighting. A fixed rule, such as one spotlight per square metre, may seem simple, but it rarely produces the best result. The number of spotlights required depends on much more than just the size of the room.

The light output and beam angle of a spotlight play an important role. A powerful spotlight with a wide beam can illuminate a larger area than a spotlight with a narrow beam. Ceiling height, colours and materials within the interior also influence the result. A dark room absorbs more light than an interior with light-coloured walls and ceilings.

Not every square metre needs to be illuminated equally either. In a kitchen, sufficient functional light on the worktop is important, while in a living room the focus is often more on atmosphere. Spotlights can be positioned strategically to highlight artwork, curtains, furniture or an architectural wall.

That is why we prefer not to position spotlights according to a fixed grid across the ceiling. We first consider where light is needed and what effect we want to create. The number of spotlights, their position, light output and beam angle are then adapted accordingly.
